SPF, DKIM, and DMARC Explained: Stopping Your Emails From Landing in Spam

If your business emails keep landing in spam folders, or bouncing entirely, the answer is usually one of three DNS records that most people have never configured. None of them are complicated once you know what they’re for.

SPF: who’s allowed to send as you

SPF (Sender Policy Framework) is a list of servers authorized to send email on behalf of your domain. Without it, receiving mail servers have no way to tell your real emails apart from someone spoofing your domain.

DKIM: a digital signature for your email

DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) attaches a cryptographic signature to outgoing email that proves it wasn’t altered in transit and genuinely came from your domain. It’s the part that says “this is authentically from us,” not just “sent from an approved server.”

DMARC: what to do when something fails

DMARC tells receiving mail servers what to do with messages that fail SPF or DKIM checks — reject them, quarantine them, or let them through anyway — and can send you reports when spoofing attempts happen.
