Why “Free” Website Builders Aren’t Always Free

Free website builder plans are a genuinely reasonable way to test an idea. The word “free” is doing some work in that sentence, though, and it’s worth knowing what it actually means before building something you plan to rely on.

Your own domain is usually not included

Most free plans put you on a subdomain (yourbusiness.builder.com) rather than yourbusiness.com — which looks less professional and is genuinely worse for building a memorable brand and for SEO over time.

Ads or branding you don’t control

Some free plans display the builder’s own branding or ads on your site — not a great look for a business trying to look established and trustworthy to a new visitor.

Real limits on what you can actually do

Storage caps, page limits, feature restrictions, and no real backup or migration path if you outgrow the platform. Moving off a proprietary builder later is often far harder than moving between standard hosting.

The honest trade-off

Free is fine for genuinely testing an idea with no real stakes. For anything you’re actually building a business around, a real domain and standard, portable hosting cost very little and remove all of the above limitations from day one.
